Kunegel installs a 34m workshop pit for the maintenance of its buses
The company Kunegel Based in Colmar, they have invested in the construction of a new workshop for the maintenance of their bus fleet. The Kunegel company specialises in national tourist transport. It is a family-run business managed by Mr Kunegel.
It's literally a stone's throw from their headquarters on Rue des Jardins, and it is in the neighbouring building that they have decided to set up. This windfall allows the company to keep its bus fleet next to the existing workshop, which is itself housed under the company's headquarters.
This was the renovation of an existing warehouse converted into a workshop for bus maintenance and repair.
Kunegel has placed their trust in us by commissioning us to build a bus workshop pit that is 1.60m deep and 34m long. The company Zwickert, which specialises in the renovation and construction of industrial buildings, carried out the excavation for the pit installation. The peculiar characteristic of the city of Colmar is that it sits above a shallow water table. At less than 1.6m deep, springs flow beneath the city.
It is therefore unsurprising that the Zwickert company encountered groundwater when excavating the soil of the existing warehouse. The photos speak for themselves.
We pumped the water out using a pump sized to meet the requirement (700 litres per hour). It was only after half a day of pumping that we were finally able to install the tank and secure it onto the existing slab. The water in the excavation prevented us from lowering the tank, as the water pressure caused it to float back up.
The pit installed and adjusted horizontally and vertically relative to the future finished ground level (+20cm), the company Zwickert created a wooden structure around the entire perimeter of the pit so as not to have to fill the entire excavation with concrete, which had been made 1 metre wider than planned.
The pit was finally received last July along with its two pit protections. At each end of the workshop pit, a motorised pneumatic aluminium cover has been installed. This allows mechanics to work safely. Indeed, when a bus occupies half of the pit, the other half remains unoccupied. From now on, the user can secure the unused half using the second cover. This is currently the best on the market regarding safety in workshops and on a bus pit.
